Title

Bloody Bridge Backpackers : Where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea

Description

The Bloody Bridge is located where the mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea and is a popular access point to the high Mournes in County Down, Northern Ireland. It has two National Trust walks and there are plans to improve the coastal walks between Kilkeel and Newcastle and Kilkeel and Cranfield. The creation of a 'Mourne National Park' is under active consideration. If the ‘Mourne National Park’ is approved, it will be the first National Park in Northern Ireland. Currently there is no facilities for people to stay overnight, although from the 1930's to the 1960's there was a popular YHA at the Bloody Bridge.

The author has a small holding at the Bloody Bridge and in response to the changing circumstances in farming and the potential of tourism in the Mournes proposes to convert an existing Cattle Shed into two Bunk Barns with a small associated campsite. Each Bunk Barn will hold 12 people and the campsite should accommodate around 18 people. The campsite consists of three very small fields in which camping will be rotated throughout the season. As it is pedestrian only access the tents will be small. A small toilet block is to be built between the three camping fields. Each field is extremely well screened and the tents will not be visible.

EU funding has been approved for the proposal under the Natural Resource Rural Tourism Initiative. This is part of the Peace II programme applied for through the Mourne Heritage Trust. The project is now waiting for planning approval.
