Their lives entwined with the sea, Black Oystercatchers thrive along the coastline around the cool tip of Africa. Similarly, the Human family have farmed here successfully for generations and were amongst the pioneers who established vineyards in the maritime ward of Elim.
Wine producer, Dirk Human, is the owner, winemaker and viticulturist of the Black Oystercatcher wines. Dirk established vineyards on the Human family farm, Moddervlei, in 1998 and the first bottling of this new South African wine was in 2003. Dirk’s knowledge of the land with its sand plains, marshlands, gravelly bottomlands, extensive limestone and calcareous dunes has enabled him to select the perfect location for the Moddervlei vineyards.
The fruit for both the red wines and the white wines grows on a cool ridge of laterite (koffieklip) and broken shale, where the vineyards flourish in a temperate Mediterranean climate. Bounded by oceans on three sides, the cool sea breezes caress the grapes constantly, allowing them to ripen gradually. This results in intense fruit flavours, which are then worked lovingly into exceptional wines.
