Black Earth Friesians is located in the beautiful rolling hills of central Dane County, just west of Madison Wisconsin, our state's capital. Our stable is located in the Village of Black Earth, a small midwestern community hallmarked by expansive farms, small town charm, and midwestern sensibilities. Black Earth Friesians is owned and operated by Phillip Smith. Like many others, Phillip was awe struck by his first encounter with a Friesian. This proved to be a life changing moment -one which compelled him to sell his beloved thoroughbreds and quarter horses and concentrate on the development of a quality Friesian breeding program. Our passion is Friesians and our business mission is to breed high quality Friesians that are not only beautiful, but great companions.
To that end, we have five mares in our breeding program: Bretschje, Froujke, Annalise, Xena, and Elveriera. We offer a range of options for the Friesian enthusiast; baroque and modern styles, weanlings, broodmares, geldings, and a Ster stallion. Currently we have three mares in foal for 2006 and we have three 2005 colts for sale. Please check out our sales page for more details.
Black Earth Friesians has been fortunate to have two very advanced riders from the Netherlands assist with training - Cynthia and Ivetta. Our horses have improved under their skilled hands - not only in movement, but safety under saddle. Their enthusiasm and love for the breed is remarkable. Because of them, we are able to offer a higher quality Friesian!
