Title

BIRMINGHAM ORATORY. Founded by John Henry Cardinal Newman

Description

The Birmingham Oratory is the birthplace of the Congregation of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri in England. St Philip Neri founded the Oratory in mid-16th Century Rome, and John Henry, Cardinal Newman, established the English Oratory in mid-19th Century Edgbaston, Birmingham and then in Brompton, London. Among names connected with the Oratory are the hymn writers Father Edward Caswall and Father Frederick Wilfred Faber, and the novelist J. R. R. Tolkien, whose guardian was Fr Francis Morgan, the inspiration for whose Two Towers is believed to be twin towers visible from the Oratory and for whose Elvish village of Rivendell may have been the community's retreat at Rednall.
