- I am a second career farmer from a family with deep roots in agriculture who decided to raise switchgrass vs. traditional crops. In a way this was an accident. While investigating what to do with our newly purchased picturesque farmland near Penn State it became apparent that traditional crops had been difficult to tend in that location, exactly the type of fallow sub-prime soil and terrain that has often been put into conservation reserve programs in the past. Then I learned of the biomass grasses work by the USDA Agricultural Research Service at University Park and it all clicked.
