Bioedit.co.uk is an online English editing and proofreading service for scientists working in the life sciences and medicine. Their services are used to check and correct English usage, grammar, punctuation and sentence structure in manuscripts prior to submission for publication in academic journals; they ensure a faithful conveyance of ideas without altering the meaning of the original text. Bioedit.co.uk was incorporated in 2001 and is located close to the University of Manchester in Stockport, UK.

Editor Selection Process

Bioedit.co.uk employ only native English speaking post-doctoral researchers and graduates with a B.A. in English Literature. Their editors are scientists, retired researchers, and professional medical writers/editors. All have experience as either referees or editors of peer-reviewed life science journals. Editors are subjected to an extensive selection process where they must show a consistent level of high quality editing over a 3 month time period before they are offered permanent positions on the Bioedit team. Only one in every 30 applicants actually receives one of these permanent positions. Additionally, all work done by the editors is subjected to spot checks to make sure their work is up to Bioedit's meticulous standards.

Submitting Manuscripts

The first step in the submission process is to create an online account. Clients are then taken to a secure encrypted area where they can upload their files. All communication that is done beyond the login page is ensured by SSL encryption through Rapid SSL, the world's second largest digital certificate provider for secure e-business transactions. All work submitted to Bioedit is strictly confidential and all communication is done in a secured environment. Every editor must sign a confidentiality agreement in which they agree not to divulge any content of any manuscript or to use any of the information in their own work. Once a manuscript has been uploaded it is checked by a moderator who assigns it to an editor whose qualifications and experience are the best match for the subject matter.

People

Patrick Hughes is the founder of Bioedit Ltd. Originally from Ireland, Patrick has traveled widely in Europe and the Far East, especially Japan. After having completed a BSc(Hons) in Galway, Ireland, he moved to Berlin, Germany to work in the Max-Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics where he worked on ribosome structure and function. He then moved to France where he completed a PhD in Biochemistry with particular emphasis on DNA replication.

Patrick worked on DNA replication and cell cycle control in E. coli and mammalian systems at CNRS for almost two decades. He also has close ties with research in Japan through his links with the Institute for Virus Research, Kyoto University.

Patrick realized what an impediment the English language can be for researchers whose native language is not English and therefore set up Bioedit Ltd in the United Kingdom, which has been providing a consistently high level of English editing to more than 400 laboratories in the biological and medical sciences throughout the world for over six years.

You can contact Patrick by leaving him a message on his talk page.

Customer Testimonials

Thanks to your advice and excellent edition, my paper is now accepted for publication in NAR. Thank you very much! Without you, this paper may have been rejected at that stage. I was indeed depressed when I received the last and harsh letter from the editor because I had no idea what to do. Your helpful advice really saved me.
