Biography
In case you haven't caught it yet, my name is Bill Stevenson. I am a member of the Applied Cognitive Science Laboratory in the School of Information Science and Technology at Penn State. My doctoral research is on how people visually enumerate objects, that is, how they count, estimate, and give rapid and accurate numerosity judgements for small numbers of objects (subitizing). To this end, I'm doing both human experimention and cognitive modeling.
On an unrelated note to my dissertation research, I'm also interested in software engineering and operating systems. I've been working in the Mac OS X Product Release Group at Apple Computer since 2004. During the school year I work part-time from my home office in State College, and during the summer I'm in Cupertino, CA full-time.
My Mom told me I should probably say something more personable in my biography. Let's see... I have an odd sense of humor and am very direct; if I think something, it is just about guaranteed that I will say it. For this reason, many people like to tell me about their ideas to get guaranteed feedback. Of course, if you have a bad idea, you might want to avoid me! The person who thought up "there is no such thing as a stupid question" had a stupid idea, for example.
