One day, in 1984, in California, when my run as a screenwriter had come to its end and I was looking for an appropriate segue, my father called and said, "I hear there are these places called video stores cropping up, why don't you check it out." It must have been one of those rare times in world history when an offspring actually took the advice of a parent.

The following year, with a little help from friends and family, I wound up opening a tiny store in Hamden, CT, amid several large, well-established video stores. Part of my 350 square foot floor space was taken up with an ancient wooden stove. There was no parking lot.

My opening inventory (as much as I could afford) consisted of 500 movies arranged within seven categories (Action, Comedy, Drama, Classics, Suspense, Foreign, Top Hits). Not many films. But I had what I thought was the key. Every one of the films had been personally chosen as among my favorites; they were all films I could easily recommend (once I knew the person's taste or mood) and that would guarantee that the renter wouldn't be wasting his time or money; films that might even plug that person into a higher cinematic experience than he was used to. My selection was small, but non pareil. I wanted my store - Best Video - to be aptly and truthfully named. We weren't selling toothpaste.
