Having served in HM Forces, REME, working on electronic equipment, until leaving the forces in 1977. His post Forces career took him into the data communications field and he worked for a number of specialist data communication organisations, in an engineering role, culminating in working for IBM, leading a team of engineers in the South of England. This developed his leadership skills as an engineer, team leader, and project Manager, training teams within the projects.
