Title
Bess Bonnier - Detroit Jazz Pianist and Composer
Description
Bonnier, who earned her bachelor's degree in English and music from Detroit's Wayne State University, first gained a measure of national attention in the late 1950s when Argo Records released her first album Theme for the Tall One. Now long out of print, Theme for the Tall One is considered a collector's item by jazz aficionados.
Bonnier's musical career hit many high notes over the years including performances at the 1982 Kool Jazz Festival, several Montreux Detroit Jazz Festivals and as a featured pianist with Barry Harris, Sir Roland Hanna and Tommy Flanigan for the Detroit Piano Summit in New York. Bonnier continues to appear in concert and is featured in artist-in-residence programs; she also is the founder of the Grosse Pointe Academy of Music.
Suite William is Bonnier's fifth recording; earlier releases include Theme for a Tall One (Argo Records, 1958), The 26th Floor(MBS Records, 1974), Duet to Quartet(Noteworks Records, 1982), Bess Bonnier and Other Jazz Birds (Noteworks Records, 1985), and Love Notes (Noteworks Records, 1997). Bonnier also has been featured on several other jazz recordings as a guest artist. Together with Paul Keller and vibist Jack Brokensha, Bess released the holiday classic CD, XMazz (AEM, 1994).
