Bemis Company, Inc was first established as J.M. Bemis and Company in 1858 in St. Louis. Their product line was mainly on bag manufacturing and has an initial investment of $2,000, six sewing machines and two printing presses. His bag company never had any serious competitor until 1866 when H. and L. Chase put up a branch in St. Louis. 1881, the first factory outside St. Louis was founded in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

1885, the name of the company was changed to Bemis Bro. Bag Co. when Stephen, Judson’s brother came back from California. It was also during this year that the company logo, the cat-in-the-bag was launched. The company became the primary importer of burlap. In the 1913, the company expanded by building a paper mill in Illinois. This is to produce stronger paper from pulp and rope stock. 1921, JM Bemis dies at the age of 88. A.F Bemis, the son, succeeded him and in late 1920s, a new product was launched. Laminated textiles were produced from woven mesh packaging.

1930, this is the year that the company started using canvass for their products. 1940s, polyethylene were converted into bags for the purpose of packaging clothes, toys, chemicals and other products. The polyethylene was added with paper and textile for added protective features. Late 1950s, Bemis Co. aimed for a grander expansion. The company bought other companies with associated technologies. 1964, the company again changed its name to Bemis Company, Inc. It likewise changed the logo to the bar and oval which is used until these days. 1970s marked the end of expansion of buying other companies but instead started to expand internally. This time the company focused on growth and profit. Products were modernized, some removed or sold while others are combined to form a better output.

1980s, the company concentrated on producing a packaging for edibles such as cheese and bacon. They also considered polyethylene packaging and labelling for consumer and industrial end uses. 1993, the ICE film was developed. 1994, concentration was made for quality packaging of the medical industry. 2000, the year when Bemis created shrink bags for preserving fresh meat and cheese. 2005, Bemis bought Dixie Toga, increasing sales to 34%. In 2006, packaging for medical devices was expanded.

Some clients of Bemis include Philip Morris, ConAgra, General Mills, Inc., Pillsbury, Archer-Daniels-Midland, Kraft foods, Procter and Gamble, Kimberly-Clark, Hormel, Boston Scientific and General Mills.
