- Our nascent community started out within the Jewish congregation of the U.S. Army stationed in the Heidelberg and Mannheim area, and we usually attend the services held at the U.S. Army synagogue situated in Mark Twain Village. But while there are now far fewer Jewish soldiers in Heidelberg than only a short time ago, the services at MTV Chapel have attracted a number of locals not associated with the U.S. military, and thus the idea was born to create a permanent egalitarian Jewish congregation in Heidelberg. Over the last few months we have evolved into a small but diverse group whose members come from a variety of Jewish traditions and from several different countries: among us we count Ashkenazim, Sephardim and Jews-by-Choice, who have their roots not only in the United States and Germany, but also in countries such as France, Tunisia, Ukraine and Croatia.
