The Jade Mountain School of Tai Chi in Centurion
People who have seen Tai Chi practiced in a park or on television recognise it as a slow, ‘dancelike’ form of movements with similarities to martial arts.
Tai Chi is a martial art that originated in China over one thousand years ago and was originally used for self-defence. (Many people, upon seeing the relaxed, smooth and flowing movements of Tai Chi for the first time cannot believe that they have anything to do with a martial art.)
Tai Chi is an abbreviation for Tai Chi Chuan. There is no single translation for these Chinese words; they carry many philosophical and poetical meanings as well as literal ones. Tai Chi is the name of the Yin Yang symbol and Chuan means fist (implying martial art). So, together Tai Chi Chuan means ‘Yin Yang fighting system’.
