Kyuquot Sound once had thriving fur trading and whaling industries but as demand decreased and populations diminished, locals turned to fishing to make their living. Evidence of the Cachalot whaling station remains today. Fishing has always been a mainstay for the Kyuquot and Checleset first nations who call this area home.
Rich in cultural history, the village of Kyuquot today relies on logging, and adventure tourism to stay afloat. Sea otters, although one of Canada's rarest mammals have once again begun to thrive in the area after being reintroduced in the late 60's.
A quick run to the fishing grounds will guarantee you a sea otter sighting along with the possibility of whales, sea lions, eagles, puffins etc.
