Buffalo Creek Literacy Project

Description

The Buffalo Creek Literacy Project, (BCLP) an independent literacy organization, provides literacy education for adults (16 +) and their families in Stokes and Surry Counties in order to eradicate illiteracy.

Mary Lee taught 7th-12th grade English in Memphis, TN, and at South Stokes High School in Walnut Cove. She has four children: Georgia, 19; Sid, 15; Jack, 6; and Kathryn almost 1. Mary founded the Buffalo Creek Literacy Project “to help fight poverty and depression by encouraging non-reading adults to learn to read well in order to fully enjoy life and work.”

Joy Lewis has devoted her time to literacy since 1978, when she took a Literacy Volunteers class near her home in New York. She has volunteered as a counselor and served on the board of directors at pregnancy care centers, and has taught Sunday School at First Baptist Church in Pilot Mountain. Mrs. Lewis is our Surry County Contact and 2002-2003 chairman of the board. She organized the Horne Creek Farm storytelling contest 2004.
