Banchory Lodge Hotel

Description

The site where Banchory Lodge Hotel now stands has an Ancient history. Around 400AD St. Columbo founded a Christian Monastery on, or near, the site where the hotel now stands offering hospitality and good cheer to travelers – a tradition which continues to this day. Before the bridge over the River Dee, built in 1798 connecting North & South, drovers, pedlers and chance travellers used the ford near this spot which was assigned to the ferryman, keeper of the Cobble, or large shallow boat in which travellers were carried over the Dee.

In the early 1800’s the Cobbleheugh Inn was incorporated into the mansion of Banchory Lodge which was the home of Sir William Burnett, owner of the Banchory Estate and brother of Sir Robert Burnett of Leys, 7th Baronet of Crathes. After his death in 1839 the tower of Scolty was erected to his memory.

In 1937 the successors of Sir William converted the mansion into a comfortable hotel, but with the onset of the second world war, the building was commissioned for an Officers Mess. During this time the manageress, Jeannie Henry, became famous as a Scottish Dancing teacher.
