What is Ayurveda? or Ayurvedic Upchar

Ayurvedic upchar or Ayurveda, or Ayurvedic medicine, is a healthy lifestyle system that has been used in India for more than 5,000 years.   • Fire and water represent Pitta, which is believed to control bodily functions such as digestion, metabolism, intelligence, and skin color. The pitta governs the emotions of anger, hatred, and jealousy.
  • The land and water represent the kapha. Kapha governs the physical structure of the body and the immune system . Emotional responses that are controlled by kapha are believed to include calm, forgiveness, love, and greed.

Doshas, which are determined at the time of conception, are also related to the physical characteristics and personality of each person. A person with characteristics of the vata type tends to have a small and thin physical constitution. Pitta-type people have a medium build and muscular body style. The physical aspect of the kapha type is usually larger and well developed. Most people are considered to have a combination of doshas, although one type usually predominates.

In Ayurvedic medicine, it is believed that if there is an imbalance in any of the three doshas, the disease manifests itself. Ayurvedic medicine treats illness in many ways, including dietary changes, herbal remedies, and exercise. According to Ayurvedic philosophy, yoga, meditation, or counseling can also be used to treat illness.
