Description

New Almaden Mines. Almaden is associated with the New Almaden Mines, which were named after the Almaden Mine in Spain and which produced mercury used processing ore during the Gold Rush. The Hacienda de Beneficio (reduction works settlement), known today as New Almaden, included the Casa Grande, built by Francis Meyers in 1854, and was the official residence of the mine manager. Today, the Casa Grande has been acquired by the County Parks Department and is the site of the New Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum.
