The first restaurant to operate under the name "AutomatTM was opened in 1902 in New York City. The concept was based on inexpensive and nourishing food delivered through vending machines in a buffet/cafeteria setting. It featured art deco themes and setting. It featured art deco themes and very upscale fixtures and it became so popular that celebrities were routinely seen there, along with white-collar and blue-collar workers.
