Description
The Austin Independent School District Native American Parents Committee is a group of students, parents and educators working to help American Indian students in the Austin area. The group is officially recognized by the Austin Independent School District and works closely with a support group of community volunteers to design programs that help young people by providing a mentor program, a Native American library, an annual Powwow and cultural classes to learn more about their Indian heritage. Great Promise is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to educate about Native American culture. Great Promise is the sponsor of Red Voices, an ongoing series of conferences on various subjects of concern to Native Americans, including health, education, culture, sovereignty issues, and much more. The Austin Powwow and Heritage Festival is the primary event for reaching out to the non-Native community.
The Austin Powwow and Heritage Festival Committee, itself a volunteer group, works year-round to plan a free gift to the Central Texas community that is an educational opportunity for schools, service organizations, and individuals who want to learn more about the American Indian cultures, traditions, and way of life both historical and contemporary. Our group is small, comprised of only about three dozen American Indian parents and volunteers. It is impossible to honor the hundreds of requests each year that we receive from people wanting us to either speak or perform for their events. Without the help of the community and the hundreds of community volunteers on the day of the event, we would not be able to provide this valuable cultural event. This award-winning festival, which thousands of people enjoy each November, needs your help to continue this event.
