Starter bikes
I recently saw a couple of great deals from Performance on bikes and thought I would share. These bikes are perfect for the starter commuter who wants to keep their expenses at a minimum. I can't guarantee commuting will be for everyone so why start off with something too expensive. On the flip side, these bikes will be better quality than your wal-mart specials. Also, they will be much easier to resell should you decide commuting isn't your thing.
I am biased towards riding a mountain bike to work. I love mountain biking and about the only way you will catch me on a road bike is during a group road ride for training. I love the freedom a mountain bike allows. If I need to get off the road because of a bad driver I can. If I have a piece of single track trail that makes my commute safer than that makes my ride all the better. I agree this bike won't be as fast as a road bike, but I'd be willing to bet it will make you stronger. Also, this is a great mountain bike for 379 bucks. It comes with a descent front shock and disc brakes. You won't find something like this at wal-mart. If you plan on ordering this online and are unsure of bike size, I would ride a 19 inch and I'm about 6 feet tall.
If you insist on the skinny tires then here is a great starter bike for you. I like this flatbar version because I just don't see a starter commuter needing the dropouts on a regular road bike. I think you will be in more control of your steering with the flatbar too. Now that I think about it I'm not sure why I don't have a flat bar for my road bike??? Maybe it would be the same as wearing a camel back on a road ride. If you are unsure of your sizing you probably want to go to your local bike shop. I would go with a 56 or 58 and I'm around 6 feet tall if this helps.
