- Jakarta is the dynamic capital city of the Republic of Indonesia. It was formerly known as Sunda Kelapa (397-1527), Jayakarta (1527-1619), Batavia (1619-1942), and Djakarta (1942-1972). It has an area of 661.52 km² and an official population of 8,389,443 (2000[1]). Jakarta currently is the eleventh largest city in the world. Including the closely surrounding integrated cities of Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi, the population swells to more than 23 million people. This massive Metropolis is affectionately known as Bodetabek by the local citizens. Jakarta is located on the northwestern coast of Java Island, at the mouth of the Ciliwung River on Jakarta Bay, which is an inlet of the Java Sea. The northern part of Jakarta is situated on a level plain approximately eight meters above sea level. The southern parts of the city are hilly.
