- Aspen Log Homes is a family owned business begun in 1974. Since opening its doors, it has sold several hundred homes in the Midwest region of the United States. Aspen builds a round log wall system with saddle notched corners using 8" Red or White Pine logs. The logs are winter-cut, squared with a saw, and air dried indoors for a minimum of two years. Readings taken at the time the logs are milled verifies the moisture content at less than 20%. After the air drying process is completed, the logs are grooved on both the top and the bottom. A 1 3/16" x 1 3/16" hardwood spline is put in the groove at the time of construction. The fit is extremely tight laterally. However, there is a small gap at the top of the spline to allow for wall compression. In addition to this tightly fitting wood-to-wood seal, caulking is a recommended option for the interior and exterior lateral joints. Also, the butt joints are dadoed and filled with fiberglass to create an air-tight seal.
