- Allow me to introduce myself--my name is Brian Appell, the owner and developer of artsEfest.com. Growing up, I was surrounded by artists and crafters, for my parents started their own craft business out of our home. Every weekend they would pack up their home-made goods and head off to the craft fairs, where they would sell painted wooden country decorations. Because of my interest in their craft business, I jumped at the chance to go with them each weekend and assist in selling. While attending the various fairs and festivals, I would walk around and see all the different crafts people made. It was amazing to me how many different types there were, not to mention the magnitude of creativity!
As time progressed and I became older, I began to help make some of the crafts. When I started experimenting with artwork of my own, I soon discovered that my passion was for photography! Therefore, I invested in a nice camera, along with a couple of lenses and began to take some photography classes. I especially enjoyed taking photographs of nature.
Since that time, I have thought extensively about how to sell my artwork and where. In the process, I have reminisced about those craft fair days of long ago with my parents and how hard they worked to create and sell their precious hand-made items, while working full-time jobs. I knew that there had to be better ways in which artists and crafts people could support their passion, without relying solely on weekend sales.
Upon having endless discussions with art enthusiasts I concluded that people love to go to craft fairs and arts festivals in part because they have the opportunity to view all types creations in one location. I thought about how I could replicate that atmosphere through the internet, which would provide more selling options, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week...and that is how artsEfest.com evolved and went live on July 15, 2003.
Our vision has been to create a community, where artists and crafters share ideas with one another, and have access to an easy and inexpensive way to display, as well as market their creations to a much wider audience. At the same time, we aim to foster public appreciation for hand-made objects in the age of mass-produced machine or sweatshop-made products. We want our customers to know that when they purchase from artsEfest.com, they are supporting not only the talent but the livelihood of many of our exhibitors.
