Description

Thomas Edison purchased two buildings in New York City, 255 and 257 Pearl Street in 1880. The two buildings would provide power to one square mile of lower Manhattan utilizing 14 miles of underground copper cable. When the Pearl Street generating system came on line on September 4, 1882, Thomas Edison began operating the first central station power plant in the United States.

Within the two buildings of the Pearl Street power station was an Armington & Sims steam engine with a 14-1/2 inch bore and 13 inch stroke.

Armington & Sims Engine Company of Eagle Street, Providence Rhode Island delivered their steam engines to Thomas Edison to drive his generators at the power stations. Both Edison and Henry Ford spoke highly of the Armington & Sims engines.
