- APNQ was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers from the Puget Sound area, the Olympia Peninsula and eastern Washington. The association's intention was to present the first juried and judged international competition among quilters of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington in the US, and Alberta, British Columbia and The Yukon in Canada. (Canada's Northwest Territories was added in 1999.)
- These visionaries recognized that this region is home to thousands of quilting enthusiasts and a proliferation of companies that support a nationwide, billion-dollar quilting industry.
