Founded in 2000 as an online resource and referral service for Americans who seek assisted living facilities for their parents and other senior relatives, A Place for Mom has grown exponentially over the ensuing decade. Its array of service contacts now reaches from independent living facilities to Alzheimer’s care units, and contact options include person-to-person telephone consultations.
When a potential client contacts A Place for Mom through its website, an Eldercare Advisor with the company usually calls back within 15 minutes. After gathering information, the consultant provides referrals to half a dozen adult care homes and facilities in the area, with information on services and charges. Depending on the elder’s physical condition, the family might consider a retirement community. In addition, the website maintained by A Place for Mom hosts an Internet forum for open discussion of dementia and Alzheimer’s, public events, legal and financial matters, caregiver guilt, and other issues.
Not only does A Place for Mom help individual citizens and families find the facility they need for their beloved elders, but the company also sells a Web-based management system to senior housing establishments for tracking sales leads. That portion of the company accounts for about 15 percent of its roughly $50 million in annual revenue. Founders John and Pamala Temple brought their management experience at Microsoft and in the assisted living industry, respectively, to their new venture along with entrepreneur Brian Trisler. The company posted a three-year growth rate of 187 percent between 2007 and 2010, according to Inc. 500/5000 rankings. In an era with a rapidly increasing senior population, other firms have perceived and supported the promise of A Place for Mom. Battery Ventures, a Massachusetts company, invested in A Place for Mom in 2006. Global equity giant Warburg Pincus bought a major stake in the firm in 2010.
