Description
Nomenclature:
Some experts distinguish between knots, hitches, and bends. For this website I decided I really don't care. If you are trying to learn what I have presented here then, like me, you're probably perfectly happy to call them all knots anyway.
Similarly, there are many names for rope, some of which, particularly in boating, depend on their use: line, hawser, sheet, halyard, outhaul, topping lift, painter, bow line, spring line, anchor rode, guy, etc. Quite often, the one word that won't be used on a boat is "rope". If you spend much time on boats you will learn these useful names and use them. Until then call it rope and learn to handle it. Become familiar with the essential knots.
However, for the purist (perhaps yourself!) you can call your knot a hitch when you make a rope fast to another object and a bend when you join two ropes together.
