Description

Excerpted from the website:

Wayne G. Sayles started selling ancient coins professionally in 1967 as a means to further his own collecting interest. After retiring in 1982 from duties as a Communications Officer in the United States Air Force, Wayne learned the basics of the publishing business at a small weekly newspaper in Lodi, Wisconsin. He enrolled in the Art History graduate program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and in 1986 earned a Master's Degree with a specialization in ancient coins as works of art. That same year, he launched The Celator- - a monthly periodical for collectors of ancient coins and artifacts- - and spent most of the next 13 years as publisher and editor of that journal. During that period, he co-authored Turkoman Figural Bronze Coins and Their Iconography (2 vols.) in collaboration with William F. Spengler and published several books on numismatic topics by other authors. In 1995, Wayne began to write a series of introductory books for this field. In six volumes, Ancient Coin Collecting was released over the next five years and was followed in 2001 by the monograph Classical Deception, which introduces the topic of counterfeits, forgeries and reproductions of ancient coins. The second edition of ACC volume I was released in 2003 and second editions of ACC volumes II and III are currently in progress. Aggregate sales of books from this series now exceeds 50,000 copies. Most recently, he published the book Alexandrian Coins by Keith Emmett and wrote the exhibition catalogue for the Ned Griner collection of ancient coins at the Ball State University Art Museum. He also wrote the "Coin Collecting" article, revised the main "Coins" article for the newest edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica, and is a contributor to Expert Village. In 2006, he received the prestigious "Numismatic Ambassador" award sponsored by Krause Publications (his former competitor). Wayne is a Biographee in Marquis Who's Who in America and is included in the 2007 edition of Marquis "Who's Who in the World". He is a Life Fellow of the American Numismatic Society; Fellow of the Royal Numismatic Society (London); Life Member of the Hellenic Numismatic Society (Athens); Life Member of the American Israel Numismatic Society; member of the Oriental Numismatic Society, International Numismatic Society, Society for Ancient Numismatics, Classical and Medieval Numismatic Society, Numismatic Literary Guild, and is an honorary member of several ancient coin clubs. In 2004, he founded the Ancient Coin Collectors Guild and serves as its Executive Director. He has lectured at international and national symposia, conventions, university classes, museums and society events, and has written more than 200 articles about ancient coinage. Some of these articles may be found online at Ancients.info. He continues to write a monthly column, "Through the Looking Glass", for The Celator. His personal collecting interest is in the Roman Provincial coins of the city of Anazarbus in Cilicia.
