- In the late seventies of the last century, Dick Bergsma the founder of Sea Trek, traveled as a backpacker island hopping through Indonesia. While traveling he learned that the ultimate way of exploring this enormous archipelago of 17,000 islands was aboard the wooden schooners called Phinisi still in abundant use carrying cargo between the islands.
- In 1985 Dick was the first one ever to set sail to the islands east of Bali bringing a group of eager travelers aboard a Phinisi.
- For nine years Dick plied back and forth between Holland and Indonesia before moving in 1994 with his family to Bali.
