- AMVETS National Service Foundation was created in 1948, with the goal of helping the unprecedented number of veterans returning from World War II to assimilate into civilian life. AMVETS National Service Officers (NSOs) and volunteers were trained by AMVETS and were recruited to work directly with these veterans and assist them with their individual needs.
