Belize has a wide variety of animals including the endangered jaguar. In fact, Belize is home to the only jaguar reserve in the world. Over 60% of Cayo District has been set aside as either a Wildlife Sanctuary, National Park, or Forest Reserve. Throughout the country there are many of these types of areas which ensures the preservation of this unique environment for Belizians and visitors alike. Belizeans appreciate and value of their abundant wildlife, rain forests and coral reefs and in fact have protected over 36% of the country with marine reserves, parks and wildlife sanctuaries. All of this contained in an area approx. the size of Massachusetts (8,866 square miles).
