Alterna er nýtt farsímafyrirtæki sem ætlar að bjóða landsmönnum að hringja ódýrt. Alterna fer í loftiðíársbyrjun 2010. IMC Island ehf. is a licensed GSM mobile operator in Iceland. A subsidiary of WorldCell, IMC Island in 2000 was awarded a GSM 1800 license by the Icelandic Post and Telecom Administration, to operate in nine populated areas in Iceland. IMC Island launched commercial operations in 2002, and installed the core/Radio Access Network (RAN).
For the past eight years, IMC focused on developing a business outside of the country. However, in 2009, IMC Island launched a sales and marketing company called Alterna Telecom which is focused on providing mobile services to the local subscriber base in Iceland. Today IMC and Alterna offer GSM services domestically in Akureyri, Egilsstadir, Reydarfjordur, Eskifjordur, Neskaupstadur and Saudarkrokur plus access to the entire country via a domestic roaming agreement. IMC Island also offers global roaming services on retail and wholesale basis.
