Plastic and fiberglass - although used in the building of boats, motor homes and other outdoor products - gives and twists actually changing in dimensions. While acceptable in these products, this is not good for a pool table that must maintain its size within thousandths of an inch to give you good playing properties, not to mention the long term terminal effect of bowing bending in the center from the 500 lb piece of slate that is used for a play surface. These lesser quality pool tables are somewhat forced to use a lighter fiberglass cement substrate, (a concrete base product impregnated with fiberglass strands to lighten and strengthen the material), that is not nearly as stable or strong as backed slate by far.
