Alexander Graham Bell received a U.S. patent for his still-uncompleted telephone on March 7, 1876, after narrowly beating out a rival inventor by a matter of a few hours when he had filed his application on February 14th. Three days later, on March 10th, he ushered in a new era in communications with his first successful telephone call with the words, ³Mr. Watson, come here; I want you,² to his laboratory assistant. .
