- The original two-story home was built in 1756 by John Dixon Sr., a Colonial clergy man, and has a gambrel roof which is typical of the Colonial
- period. In the early 19th century, the home was bought by Thomas Smith, a local merchant and delegate to the Virginia Legislature. Smith erected a large, three-story addition to the home in the Federal Style, including a towering spiral staircase that begins in the front entrance and continues to the third floor.
