Description
I am the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Aid The Children Network. My names are Michael Oko Davies and my co-founder partner is Margot Krijgsman. I am a Ghanaian and my partner who has left our organisation due to health reasons is a Dutch citizen.
In 1998, we realized the need for a child abuse and neglect prevention institution in The Gambia. There were not many institutions at that particular time advocating for the prevention of child abuse and many children had their rights violated with impunity.
It was not an easy task for us to undertake such a drive – though there are various laws that met to protect the child - in a country were religious, cultural believes and traditions are entrenched so much within the communities, and society as a whole. Adding little to people’s knowledge of child protection seems remote and difficult to achieve. However, we have to start form somewhere and so we did by establishing Aid The Children Network to increase awareness of the very existence of violations of the basic rights of vulnerable children in The Gambia and other African countries. We also appreciate that such undertaken cannot be achieved in isolation. Therefore, we team up and continue to seek partnership with other institutions and individuals to form a net work of concerned professionals who will devote their time and resources to bettering the lot of children in trouble and suffering from various levels of the effects of victimization, neglect and abuse as well as those in conflict with the law.
My team of professionals and my humble self as well as network membership is willing to provide services that aim to curb various forms of child abuse, which potentially crush the spirit and physically risk child development.
