- Publishers large and small spend large sums of money signing an author, developing a manuscript, editing, formatting, designing, and producing a finished book. Most publishers pay for expensive Advance Review Copies (ARCs). These softbound unedited proofs are used primarily to attract prepublication publicity because many major outlets will not review from published books. These ARCs are dispatched far and wide, sometimes by overnight mail, but usually via UPS ground or priority mail.
