- Many rules are known, at some unconscious level, by all competent speakers of the English Language. This is how sentences are formed, and its realisation is described as performance. Competent speakers also know how to use the smallest units of grammar, (morphenes), and combine them grammatically with new words to create new meanings. This knowledge of morphology, using morphenes to change the meaning or grammar of a word, and syntax, the order that words can be arranged in, is essential to successful communication whether in writing or in speech. The grammar of speech, however, has its own constructional principles, and is organised differently from writing. Thus we see there is a need for the learner to be aware that there are different grammar rules for speech and writing, and there is a difference between descriptive and pedagogic grammars. Descriptive describes what is, and Pedagogic is for students of language who need summaries of what is correct and what is not correct. Word meanings can only be resolved when a word is seen in context, as the same collection of sounds and letters can have many different meanings. This polysemy, word in context, is understanding the meaning in context, that allows us to say, which meaning of the word, in that particular instance is being used.
