Title

Aatmic Science means The Science of Soul

Description

The Aatmic Science believes that the soul is not a mysterious concept which can be understood only by the religious people. It believes that soul is the source of creation of all material realities of the universe. Hence the signature of soul can be seen in every single reality. Therefore, soul is knowable from its signature (body) which are material and perceptible.

The scientists have always focused on matter that is perceptible and measurable while ignoring the existence of soul. It is from this soul that we experience all the emotions and the greatest of the human qualities like intelligence, creativity and wisdom are created. Thousands of years back the great western philosopher Aristotle contemplated that the body and soul are inseparable in any living entity and he believed that the body is the material manifestation of the soul.

Soul may be imperceptible to the material world but felt most intensely in all human beings. Since soul is believed to be the spark of the universal soul or God therefore, one can discover the deepest knowledge by discovering the truth within oneself. Only a man free of material perception of truth can discover truth of the soul. In the words of Galileo, the Italian physicist and astronomer, “You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him find it within himself”. The Indian philosopher also believed that the deepest of the knowledge can be searched by the discovery of the self.

The ancient saints of India used the inward search of self to search the truth by meditation and intuition. One of the fundamental differences which emerge between the intuitive truth of ancient sages and the analytical and materialistic truth of science is that the intuitive truth is more synthetic since it originates from the soul (which pervades all beings) while the scientific truth is very distinctive as it originated from the study of matter (which is made of numerous basic particles, atoms, molecules etc).

The best example of intuitive truth in science was the theory of relativity developed by Einstein. The theory was developed purely by intuition of mind and no previous research was referred in the paper. It is this theory which united matter and energy made Einstein the man of the century and one of the most respected scientists of all time.

Einstein believed that a good theory is one in which a minimum number of postulates is required to account for the physical evidence. He also believed that those theories where the facts fits into subsequently are more likely to pass the test of time that those which or based on the observations. Thus if there is a theory which is so old that it can’t be based on the present day realities and yet if it can accurately predict the observations of modern world, it can surely be the most suitable to know the perennial truth.

Many such timeless theories were summarized in Gita which was written in the period 1500 BC to 600 BC in India. While the latest scientific discoveries are forgotten within years, the knowledge of Gita is still refereed across the world by the people of different cultures and religions since these theories were based on the discovery of the deepest truths of life which are relevant even today. Gita is surely a philosophy which passes the test of time since it is still referred after many thousands of years after its creation not as a religious text but as a source of knowledge by the greatest mind of our times.

Aatmic Science is an attempt to synthesize the knowledge of the Gita with the knowledge of the modern science.

The basic principles of Aatmic Science are based on the philosophy of Veda, Upanishads and Gita. The most important principles of Aatmic Science are discussed as following.

(1) The Concept of Micro-Universe The first basic principle of Aatmic Scince is that man is the reflection of the universe. The Upanishads, state:

As is the human body, so is the cosmic body As is the human mind, so as the cosmic mind As is the microcosm, so is the macrocosm

Thus to understand the creation of the universe, we have to understand the creation of human life. In order to understand the mind of the universe (laws of nature) we have to understand the human mind. Thus human being can be said to be a reflection or a model of the universe by which we shall attempt to understand the universe. We, therefore, call human being a micro-universe. One Indian philosopher has rightly said “Aham Brahmasmi” (I am the universe). Thus there can be two methods to know the truth of the knowledge of the universe. One is to look without i.e. by external observation of the facts and objects which is typically the scientific method of investigations. The other method to search the truth is by introspection of the world within. This is the philosopher’s method of knowing the truth. However, both types of truths or laws are not contradictory to each other but complement each other. The philosophies can be proven scientific investigations and no scientific theory can take birth without the intuition or introspection by the scientists. S Radhkrshnan, one of the greatest Indian philosopher of the modern science sums up the concept of the world inside in the following words The philosophical attempt to determine the nature of reality may start either with the thinking self or the object of thought. In India the interest of philosophy is in the self of man. .. In India “Atmanam viddhi” Know the self, sums up the law and the prophets. With man is the spirit which is the center of everything.

(2) Body & Soul As per the Aatmic theory, the human body (or any living body) is the material image of the soul. In Gita, Lord Krishna states while explaining the creation of (material) universe: “Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Ether, Mind, Reason and Ego- thus eightfold are my Nature. This is my lower aspect; but know thou My other aspect, the higher – which is jiva (Atman) by which this world is sustained. Know that these two compose the source from which all beings spring; I am the origin and the end of the entire Universe. (Gita VII 4, 5)” Thus, the basic theory of Gita is that the (material) body of the man is the reflection of the soul (Atman). It is the soul which is the spark of the Universal Soul (Paramtam or God), which is the seed for the creation of the body. Therefore, the body changes when the (nature of) soul of the man changes. So you can change the nature of the soul by changing your body or changing the nature of soul will automatically bring the change in the body.

(3) The Source of All Action We scientists believes that we are all free to do our action, Gita Says (Gita, III 27) All Actions is entirely done by the nature of the sou (of man)l. Man deluded by his ego thinks, “I am the doer”. We all know that in the physical world, same (electric or magnetic) charges repel each other and opposite charges attract each other. They do so because it is their nature. We also know that all material objects attract each other due to the attraction of gravity because it is the nature of the mater to attract each other. If you leave a mass in the air it can never go up in the air, but it has to reach the earth due to the effect of gravitational force of the earth. Similarly Gita tells that all our actions are done automatically due to our nature. However, our thoughts are so intimately integrated with out body that we feel as if we are ourselves doing the task voluntarily. It is for this reason that some people love exercising and body building while other hates it, some people can not stand the smell of smoke while others get intoxicated by it. Therefore, if you are attracted towards unhealthy food and unhealthy lifestyle, it is your nature (of the soul) which is responsible for it.

(4) The Nature of Soul Just like the electric charges have three natures (positive, negative and neutral), the human beings also have three natures, viz. Satvik (The Nature of Truth), Rajsik (The Nature of passion or desire) and Tamsik (The Nature of darkness or ignorance). Every human being has all the three natures present in him. However, the proportion of these three basic natures is different in each person which makes each human being unique A brief description of the three natures of soul are as following.

The Truthful (Satvik) Nature of Soul The word Satvik is derived from sat which means truth. All the activities of the truthful person is based on the concept of truth and morality. He performs the actions without any personal benefits or sensual pleasure but as the duty to achieve the ideals.

The Passionate (Rajsik) Nature of Soul The word Rajsik is derived from the word “raja” which means King. Thus the traits of Rajsik are quite similar to that of the traits of king. Due to Rajsik nature, the man is passionate about the physical and sensual pleasures and material achievement of the world.

The Ignorant (Tamsik) Nature of Soul The word Tamsik has come from tamas, which means darkness. The tamsik is the passive nature of the man. Just like the man or any other living being needs darkness to sleep and refresh, similarly due to the tamsik nature, the man seeks inaction and ignorance from the worldly activity.

(5) Relationship between Body & Soul Our body is also extremely intelligent. You can feed it virtually any food like meat, fish, vegetables, cereals, milk, egg; sweet and it takes the nutrients essential for the body and removes the rest from the body. Similar intelligence can be found in animals that may eat plants and produce milk, blood, bones as required by them. Now think of the plant. They simply take water, air, sunlight from their surroundings and make fruits, vegetables, leafs and cereals. All the living entities including our body is not an ordinary machine but an intelligent machine which know what it wants and also knows how to build the desired chemical from the raw material available to it.

You may ask, if the body is intelligent then why it craves for the food which is harmful for it. Why, it craves high fat, high carbohydrate food which have large calories which increases the weight and afflicts the body with so many diseases. Why do we crave for cigarette, alcohol, and drugs which are known to be harmful to the body? This mystery is explained in Gita (VI 6) in following verse

The man who has won the self (body) by the help of his intelligence (soul), his soul is friend of self. Else the soul of the man behaves like enemy of the self (body). Thus If the man fail to win the body which means discipline the body, then the soul of the man becomes enemy of the body. This results to the change of intelligence, mind and senses in such a way that the body craves for the food which are harmful for it.

(6) The Relationship between Body, Soul and God Gita (III 42-43) explains the relationship of body, senses, mind, Individual Intelligence (Soul) and the Universal Intelligence (God) in the following words.

The senses are superior to the body. Above the senses is the mind, above the mind is the soul (individual intelligence) and above the soul is God (Universal Intelligence). Thus realizing God to be superior to intelligence, control the body by the soul and destroy lust, the eternal enemy of man.

This is the most important theory of Gita which is used for understanding the relationship between body and soul. It says that in an ideal person, the senses are not slave to the body but they control the body. The mind controls the senses and the body. The mind is controlled by the soul or the intelligence of the person. The soul is controlled by the Universal Soul or God. Gita therefore, suggest that man must control his body by the soul or intelligence. If he fails to do so that soul of the man would act in a way which is inimical to the body.

All the lifestyle diseases are caused due to the reversal of the “order” stated in Gita. In an unhealthy man, the body is superior to the senses, the senses are superior to the mind, the mind rules the intelligence or soul and the individual intelligence considers itself superior to the Universal Intelligence or God. The man is always craving for the comforts which pleases the body and seeks to obtain physical pleasures which satisfy the senses. He eats the foods which satisfy his passion of the senses. The mind of this person is completely dictated by senses. If he likes something which is bad, immoral, illegal, the mind discovers a logic or rationale which proves that senses are right and he must do the job. In short his mind becomes the advocate of the devil (senses).

The intelligence of the person which should guide the mind in the following the right path, is governed by logic of the mind. His mind get dictated by the senses and the man stop listening to his natural (inner) voice. Such people have no faith in Universal soul or God. God here does not mean any specific or personalized God but the Universal soul. It may be important to remember that God is in every one and every one is in God. Therefore if only you can appreciate His creation, you appreciate Him.
