Slow-reveal advance-fee scam. They email job searchers to bring them in for an "interview" or find suckers at job fairs, but they don't have any jobs and their career advice is not worth a dime. The first appointment is to size you up and see how much money they can get out of you in fees. Sometimes they insist that your financial decision-maker come with you to the second appointment. At the second appointment they say you have incredible qualifications and they want to connect you with a company from their vast database, but you have to pay in advance. When you ask "Why would the job-seeker pay and not the employer?", they say that paying for their invaluable career services is an investment in yourself! Since you are going to end up making you so much money that this fee they ask is like nothing, and tax deductible anyway. In real life, it is not tax-deductible, but once they get your money they are not motivated to talk to you or remember your name or contract (Do you have a copy of that?). AA Careers wanted $5600 from me and in return they promised to help me find a job earning between 150 and 170K based on their industry contacts and premium database. They had a lot of glowing endorsements that sounded hollow and phoney to me, like bad advertising. Edwin Pollock became hostile and insulting when I rejected his offer and that made me suspicious because if it was a legitimate business offer, why get angry that it was not for me? I think that he is crazy and you might too if you have one or more interactions with him. He is very controlling, manipulative, bullying, and he is definitely running a scam and looking for suckers. I posted my experience online and he started calling me and threatening me. He must have convinced Yelp to remove my review, but there are other complainers and truth-speakers (and FIVE-STAR glowing endorsements) http://www.yelp.com/biz/aa-careers-santa-clara.

I found this alert from http://sanjose.bbb.org/GIReport.aspx?NewsID=5 where Edwin "responds" to complaints (fulfilling the BBB requirement) but does not make refunds.

I found this Rip-off report that mentions Edwin Pollock and the money people lost to his "career assistance": http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/031/ripoff0031551.htm

I found these complaints about Advantage Associates California which is what Edwin Pollock used to call AA CAreers: http://www.yelp.com/topic/san-jose-advantage-associates-california. One guy said he wasn't getting any career assistance and didn't have more money and Edwin turned him over to a collection agency! Having a bad credit rating makes it impossible to get a good job!

From court records in Contra Costa county, Edwin Pollock has prior experience with fraud. In 1992 he consented to refrain from:

  • representing that clients can expect to find a new job within any specified period of time;
  • representing that his firm arranges interviews for clients with potential employers;
  • representing that his firm has job positions available;
  • representing that his firm has contacts or provides contacts or puts clients in contact with key executives;
  • representing that a prospective client can expect to obtain a new job at any particular salary or salary range;
  • representing that his firm carefully selects the people who become clients because the selection is the fees the clients pay.

The wheels of justice are slow so it is better to avoid this scam in the first place.
