Ali Riza Kutlu, b. 1980, is based in Toronto, Canada. He was born in Kurdistan, Eastern Turkey. In 1985, he moved to Western Turkey where he grew up and studied. He graduated from the University of Nine September in 2004 with BA in Business Management.
In 2002, his central concentration was on creating images and documenting the social outcome of the war against the Kurds in Kurdistan and Turkey. He realized that there was not enough documentation illustrating the political and social effects of this civil war due to restrictions on professional photographers and media who were forbidden to document war images.
Kutlu focuses his photography on people who live in poverty, individuals who face human rights abuse, and the forgotten individual whose stories are never told. He believes that social documentary photography is a way to express social justice for all human conditions. He has immense respect for the untold and forgotten stories within all social structures.
