History

AMR was started in 1992, due to the consolidation of several large ambulance companies. Since that time, AMR has acquired 200 other companies, as well. In 1996, AMR was acquired by Laidlaw International, becoming a subsidiary. Laidlaw of North America provides school and inter-city bus transportation, municipal and para-transit bus transportation, health care transportation and emergency management service. They employ 95,000 people throughout Canada and America.

In February of 1997, AMR merged with Med Trans, becoming the largest ambulance service provider in the U.S. In the first quarter of 2005, Management and Onex Partners L.P formed EMS L.P. to purchase AMR and EmCare from Laidlaw International Inc. Onex Corporation is one of Canada 's largest companies with global operations in service, manufacturing and technology industries and has annual revenues of approximately $16 billion and assets of approximately $13 billion.

AMR and EmCare are now wholly owned subsidiaries of EMS L.P., an emergency management company held by the investment firm Onex.
