History
Farmers Mutual Automobile Insurance Company was founded on Oct. 3, 1927 in Madison, Wisconsin. Just eleven years later, both their premiums and assets had surpassed $1 million.
Farmers Mutual began to offer its own sickness and accident insurance in 1957, and the next year they introduced homeowner's insurance and changes their name to the American Family Life Insurance Company. In 1963 the policy-holders voted to change the name again to the American Family Mutual Insurance Company.
In 1969 they opened a separate business, American Family Financial Services. American Family had grown to become the fifth-largest mutual auto insurer by 1975 and been ranked as the 11th-largest property/casualty insurer by 1994. By 1997, American Family had grown to become the 10th-largest property/casualty insurer in the nation, with assets surpassing $8 billion. Their assets for 2001 exceeded $10 billion.
