About the Company and its History

AEP which stands for American Electric Power was founded in the year 1906. The company is headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. It supplies power to eleven states making it the largest electricity company in the United States. The company is further divided into 7 major geographical areas based on its locations. The company was incorporated on Dec 20, 1906 in Albany, NY. The company supplies power to more than 5 million customers. The company was originally formed from a utility holding company called “Electric Company of America” which was organized in the year 1899. AEP acquired its first utility property on Jan 2, 1907 which provided electric service, gas, water, steam, transit or ice to communities in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. The company got its current name in the year 1958 after merging with Central and Southwest Corporation in the year 2000.

AEP is America's largest generator of electricity, with a large fleet of power plants. Apart from that its asset base also includes coal mines, barges, rail cars and transportation terminals.

Power Plans

AEP owns and operates about 80 generating stations in the United States, with a capacity of more than 36,000 megawatts. While the size of the fleet is exceptionally huge, it's the efficiency and the resulting reliability and operational economies that has earned AEP its reputation as a pioneering, innovative, dependable, low-cost producer of power.

AEP uses diverse fuels to generate electricity. Coal-fired plants accounts for 73 percent of AEP's generating capacity, while natural gas represents 16 percent and nuclear 8 percent. The remaining 3 percent comes from wind, hydro, pumped storage and other sources.

Coal Tranportation

AEP acquired MEMCO Barge Line, Inc., in 2001 thus greatly enhancing its coal transportation resources. AEP's transportation infrastructure now includes approximately 7,500 rail cars, 1,800 barges, and 37 tug boats. AEP-owned barges carry coal up and down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers and along the Gulf Coast. AEP has interests in two terminal facilities. The Cook Coal Terminal, located on the Ohio River, with a 20 million tons per year (tpy) transfer capability, including rail-to-barge transfer. The International Marine Terminal, located in New Orleans, has a 12 million tpy transfer capability, and an 8 million tpy mid-stream capability. AEP's maintenance/fleeting operations consists of a railcar maintenance facility in Metropolis, Illinois, a full-service shipyard in Harvey, Louisiana and 5 barge repair and cleaning facilities in the lower Mississippi River
