- About John Andrew Phillips
- John was born in Mt. Holley, New Jersey, in the spring of 1964, the youngest of four sons. John’s first memories of music are standing beside his mother in the non-instrumental Church of Christ, learning harmony parts in an a cappella setting. The family moved to the foothills of North Carolina when John was seven. It was on a two-hundred-acre farm, nestled in “Happy Valley,” surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, where John would become immersed in the rich Cherokee and Catawba Indian history of that area. The family over the years found hundreds of artifacts, collected dozens of folk stories, and learned a handful of folk songs tied to the region. By the time John was a teenager he was in love with the area’s rich folk music, art, dance, and history. John began playing guitar at age fourteen and wrote his first song that same year. During his school years he was very involved in art, band, and chorus, and won several local and state awards. By age nineteen he was being mentored by the late Merle Watson and his famous father, bluegrass legend Doc Watson. John recorded his first album that year, co-produced by Merle.
