We didn't produce this video - it was produced by the Salvation Army - but it is representative of projects we are working on. Besides, it's just cool!

Our History

In the 1970’s a bible study/prayer meeting was started in a home. It was led by a woman named Barbara Purcell. The bible study was so good that it began to grow. It grew so large that the house became too small to accommodate the people and they needed to find another location.
The new location was the Isaac Walton League cabin inside the gates of the Whittier Dump, across the street from Penn Park. It was quite an interesting location. Because it was on the grounds of the Whittier Dump, there were many rats. Now, we never saw any live rats, but we sure saw the evidence they left behind! Bees also loved the cabin. Often, we would see some bees flying around. They never really bothered us when the “prayer meeting” was in session, however, the walls vibrated and when it was real quiet, we could hear the monotonous drone of the bees. They had built a huge hive inside the walls of the building. We could say that the bees were praising the Lord with us!
It was during that time at the Isaac Walton League that the once a week bible study went to twice a week, Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday’s at 4:00 p.m. These days and times were selected because other churches did not meet on Thursdays and the 4:00 p.m. hour is because it is after services in the morning and before evening services for most churches. This gave people a chance to attend their services and still come to learn from this woman of God.
The first Deliverance Seminar was held at the Isaac Walton League cabin. It was a three night seminar. God moved mightily through this woman who spoke to demons with such authority! People were set free and lives were changed. People from all denominations attended this seminar, including Catholics and Protestants alike. A Catholic priest and a couple from a Catholic church brought a young man with them on the second night of the seminar. He sat with his arms crossed, glaring at Barbara. Before the service ended, his chair fell backwards and he fell to the floor. There was much prayer. The third night of the seminar, the same thing happened. The young man then received Christ and even his physical appearance had changed. Several months later, he informed Barbara Purcell that he had brought a gun to the seminar and when he saw her, he hated her so much that he wanted to kill her. When he reached for his gun, he was slammed to the floor. After this happened the second night he was there, he decided that this must be a woman of God. God actually scared him into the kingdom.
Barbara Purcell became ordained under the Foursquare Gospel and, after much prayer, Cornerstone became a church under the Foursquare Gospel.
Soon, however, another building needed to be located because attendance flourished. Our next site was the Whittier Foursquare Church fellowship hall on Washington Avenue. Then we moved to the Presbyterian Church hall on Broadway and El Rancho in Whittier. Like the Israelites, we kept moving and settled for a few months at Wiggins School behind Fred C. Nelles School for Boys. Then came a big move. Cornerstone Fellowship moved to the Disciples of Christ Church on Passons Boulevard in Pico Rivera. While there, Cornerstone’s ministries were birthed and grew. A Men’s Rehabilitation Home was opened, run by Pastor Charles and Sandra Woody. Some wonderful success stories have evolved from the men’s home, changing addicts and alcoholics to productive, sober individuals, some even living for the Lord as pastors. After a few snags, the men’s home, now called New Life Restoration under the leadership of Pastor Eric Tietze is in full swing, changing lives.
A dream of Pastor Eric Tietze to feed the hungry and homeless and needy became a reality while at the Pico Rivera church. Once a month, a free breakfast of Menudo, Huevos Rancheros, Scrambled eggs and sausage, bacon, or ham with pancakes was offered. A handful of free food items were also given away to those who came for the breakfast. Since then, the food ministry (now named Heart of Compassion Distribution or HOC) has grown into a multi-million dollar ministry. Pastor Eric’s dream of feeding the neighborhood hungry and needy, now feeds hundreds of thousands of people locally and across the United States and Mexico.
Having to relocate again, Cornerstone was welcomed by the pastor of a Methodist church to use their facilities for a few months. The generosity of the church was greatly appreciated by all at Cornerstone, but another move was necessary after a few months. The pastor of a Nazarene Church opened his doors to us.
Cornerstone Fellowship changed its name to Cornerstone Celebration Center when the Lord spoke to Senior Pastor Barbara Purcell in 2005. Music and Praise and Worship are a huge part of the ministry of Cornerstone where Jesus is celebrated and, thus, the name change is very fitting.
In May 2006, our beloved pastor, Barbara Purcell, went home to be with the Lord. After much prayer and guidance, a new senior pastor was selected. Pastors Charles and Sandra Woody took the helm and under their leadership, the fulfillment of the visions of Pastor Barbara is coming to pass. The new leadership has also brought forth new visions and a new direction. With the blessing of the Foursquare ministries, Cornerstone was released from its affiliation with the Foursquare Gospel and is now called Cornerstone Celebration Center International, Inc. under the covering of Jan Painter Ministries.
Another temporary home needed to be located and in a matter of a few days, the pastor of a Victory Outreach church agreed to share his facility with Cornerstone. A major fundraising effort has now begun to raise enough to finally fulfill Pastor Barbara’s vision to have a building that Cornerstone can call “home”. Like the Israelites, Cornerstone is looking forward to cease being nomads and entering in to the promise land. Hallelujah!!
