University of Pennsylvania which was established in the year 1740 was the first university in the history of United States and also the fourth oldest educational institution. It is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the fifth biggest city of United States. Popularly known as Penn, the university is a private and co-educational institution. The university has a rich endowment of $5.9 billion. The university campus is roughly 270 acres.

Penn Alumni consists of an impressive list which includes the ninth president of the United States, William Henry Harrison, Real Estate tycoon Donald Trump, World’s second richest man Warren Buffett, Len Bosack of Cisco and many more.

Reputation

The university has outstanding reputation all over the world for its excellent faculty, unmatched programs and state of the art research facilities. The university is ranked seventh in the country for the year 2007 according to U.S News, fourth in the Ivy League. The university was at number four in 2005 and 2006 per U.S News. The university is a leader in arts and humanity, the social sciences, architecture, communications and education. The school is popular especially for business, law and medicine programs. The undergraduate business program is ranked number by business week.

Programs

The university offers more than 100 programs in various areas of study.

Student Body

Number of undergraduate student enrollment is about 10,422. Number of graduate students is about 9,349. The university has a large presence of international students also. Of the 2,700 international application received, about 16% got the admission offer. More than 17% of the first year students are international, the breakdown is as follows: 38.8% Asians, 15.7% from Africa and the Middle East, 17.1% from Europe, 13.5% from Central/South America and the Caribbean 13.1% from Canada and Mexico, 1.8% from Australia and the Pacific. The total number of international students at Penn is whopping 4,514 indicating that it is a truly global university. The total number of faculty members is 4,235.

Student Life

For those who want to live on campus the university has a big campus hall with a capacity of accommodating 6,750 students with meal service. The students have a choice of 15 meals per week. Types of residences include sorority houses, housing for married students, coed residence halls, women’s residence halls, and fraternity houses. Number of registered organizations is 250; Number of social fraternities is 34 and Number of social sororities’ is12. The campus is vibrant with many on-campus activities which include academic clubs, television station, theatre/drama, choir, concert band, newspaper, orchestra, religious activities, sports, minority cultural activities and what not. The university has a pretty good press covering broad spectrum of publications. The press was incorporated with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1890 and the first publication of the press came out in the last decade of the 19th century. By 1950 the press had published more than 700 books. Today the press published about 100 books and journals every year with a turnover of $3 million.
