Completely independent, The Friend brings readers news and views from a Quaker perspective, as well as from a wide range of authors whose writings are of interest to Quakers and non-Quakers alike. There are articles in The Friend on issues such as peace, spirituality, Quaker belief, ecumenism and many others, as well as news of Friends from Britain and abroad. There are book reviews and a lively letters section.
Our print run is 4000. Our anecdotal and survey evidence suggests that our actual readership is more than 15,000, as so many Friends share copies instead of subscribing themselves. While we understand the reasons for this, it does mean that the future of The Friend is compromised.
We print addresses so that Friends can correspond with each other. We can withold addresses if requested, but we need a full postal address in order to accept the letter for publication. Because copies of The Friend go to prison libraries, some Friends have received letters from prisoners in the UK, as well as from abroad. While many Friends have rewarding correspondences with prisoners, Friends are under no obligation to reply and should bear this in mind if they have a particular reason to keep their address private.
