Description ENG

“The garden of destinies”
With the aim to honor the memory of those Latvians who became the victims of the 20th Century totalitarian regimes in Latvia, a memorial and commemoration site called Liktendarzs (briefly translated as “The garden of destinies”) is to be created. For this purpose, Koknese Island, located in the middle of the Daugava River near the Koknese castle ruins and Koknese Lutheran Church, has been selected.

Within this context, the memorial site should symbolically gather all Latvian souls lost in different parts of the world, showing the price that has been paid for the freedom of the Latvian nation and the independence of Latvia. At the same time, the remembrance site should testify to the endurance and the strength of the nation, which allowed it to overcome hardships and to look with hope toward the future. The memorial site should not arouse in the visitor a glum, depressing feeling. Rather, it must serve for enlightenment and consolation. In order to ensure that we - ourselves, our children and next generations, as well as guests from other countries would understand the size of tragedy for the Latvian population, the monument should consist of so many elements, as Latvia has lost in the number of people. Besides the beautiful Latvian scenery, the place of commemoration should visually and in space show how large the losses of the Latvian nation are. A special role should be granted to the Daugava, the river that has historically been linked to the destiny of the Latvian people and on which Koknese Island is located, as well as to the surrounding landscape and natural beauty.

As we know, no monument of national scale so far has been built for the repressed and lost Latvians, which would commemorate losses of our nation during the last hundred years and the suffering and wrong caused to these people.

Respecting the aim and the scale of the project President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers in 2008 has taken the guardianship for “The garden of destinies”

Apraksts Latviski
